Join us on February 15th for our first ever Codenames Tournament! Codenames was one of the most popular games from last year and will appear on this season of Will Wheaton’s Tabletop.

We will be using custom software for this event which will play out like a Codenames game show. 2 teams will be competing at a time with the game playing out on our big screen. Prizes will be awarded to the top finishing teams!.

The tournament will be single elimination and teams are limited to 4 players. Choose your spymaster wisely. In the interest of time, the tournament will be limited to 8 teams. Based on interest we may add another time slot.

Put together a team of 2 to 4 players, come up with a clever team name, and polish up your spy skills.

Haven’t played Codenames before? No problem! All players are welcome. Check out our friend Rodney Smith’s great how to play video.

To register, send an email to with the subject “CODENAMES – [Enter Your Team Name]”. A confirmation email will be sent within 24 hours.

The Board Room’s standard $5 admission charge applies for all players (free for members, Monday is member’s night), and due to Nova Scotia liquor laws, this event is restricted to those 19 years of age and older.

During the month of December, our Board Game Bosses are hard at work not only teaching games to our cafe guests, but also making recommendations for holiday shoppers! We’ve taken a quick poll of our Game Bosses, and here are their suggestions for last minute stocking stuffers:

LEWIS Star Realms is the game I’d recommend as a perfect stocking stuffer. There is no better 2 player space colonization game that fits into a sock!

Collection Connection: Three Overlooked Games

Written by: on April 25th, 2014

For many, there is little differentiation between a great board game, and a great cafe game.  Does the game fit on the table?  Shouldn’t that be good enough?  From the perspective of a Board Game Boss, it’s not just about the experience of playing a great game, but the accessibility of finding the right game for the right people.  More often than not, that means finding a game that can be taught quickly, with little downtime between selecting the game and playing the first turn.

The most popular cafe games include titles such as Ghost Blitz, Anomia, and of course, Cards Against Humanity.  However, in this article, we’d like to take a look at three overlooked games that can be learned in less than 5 minutes, and still offer up a tremendous payoff for the time invested:

 1.  FAUNA

Fauna: The Board Room Game Cafe

As far as hybrid games go, it doesn’t get any more weird than Fauna.  It’s an animal trivia game, with elements of gambling, worker placement, and resource management.  Not only that, but it’s a simple game to learn, and offers a rewarding experience lasting the better part of an hour.

That's Life | The Board Room Game Cafe

Perfect for players looking for a small step away from Monopoly and Sorry, That’s Life is a game that takes just a few minutes to learn, and allows players to venture through a board-based journey via dice rolling and clever pawn movements.  Games typically last about 30-45 minutes, keeping players engaged for the entirety of the game.

Tapple | The Board Room Game Cafe

Scratching an itch half way between the classic party games CatchPhrase and Scattergories, Tapple is an instant hit for lovers of both party and word games.  One of our Board Game Bosses can have you jumping into this game in just a minute or two, with a frantic hot potato experience that will likely result in multiple games being played.

Over 400 board and card games are at your fingertips when you visit The Board Room Game Cafe.  Enjoy one of our hand-made grilled sandwiches, tasty snack bowls, along with a local craft beer, and try a game that you may have never heard of before!
